On March 7, 1942, 89-year-old Lucy Parsons died in a house fire in Chicago. On this anniversary of her death and in honor of Women’s History Month, we share this essay about her life by William Loren Katz. As Katz explains, Parsons was such a renowned labor organizer and orator that one Chicago official called her “more dangerous than a thousand rioters.” While missing from most history textbooks today, Parsons played a major role in many of the historic events of the late 19th and early 20th century including the Haymarket affair, the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW), the anti-lynching crusade, the campaign to save Sacco and Vanzetti, the Knights of Labor, and more. She called for the use of nonviolence and sit-ins decades before Gandhi, King, the sit-in movement, and the occupy movement. Voluntarios que preparan “tuppers” caseros para paliar el hambre de sus vecinos

MADRID // Cuando el agua hierve, Jaime mete en la olla dos kilos de macarrones. Como cada martes desde el pasado octubre, cocina 15 raciones de pasta boloñesa vegetal para repartirlas a las 20.30 horas en la céntrica plaza madrileña Tirso de Molina a todo aquel que se acerca a recoger uno de los packs que prepara. Estos incluyen un plato de pasta o de arroz con legumbres, un vaso de caldo caliente y un bocadillo vegetal con una pieza de fruta. Jaime forma parte de un grupo de voluntarios que pone sus recursos y trabajo al servicio de personas anónimas que acumulan problemas. Más de 60 personas cenan los martes y los miércoles gracias a su empuje y altruismo.
